By truck. By tote. By Barge?!

A barge is probably the last mode of transportation that comes to mind for shipping soil. In fact, most people probably wouldn’t think of it as an option at all. But sometimes, on very rare occasions, our soil does get to travel by this more unusual method.

A customer required 600 cubic yards of soil to be delivered to a project located in Haida Gwaii. A total of fifteen truck and transfer loads, each with 40 cubic yards of Veratec’s proSOIL, were all delivered to and then dumped onto a barge in Richmond, BC. Once all the proSOIL was loaded and secured, the barge headed up the coast to make it’s delivery.

Usually Veratec’s soil is shipped bulk, with our standard deliveries being by truck and transfers, carrying up to 40 cubic yards of material each. Smaller orders are delivered by tandem trucks, which each carry up to 16 cubic yards of soil.

Sometimes our soil is shipped in cubic yard totes on a flat deck truck to meet a customer’s specific project requirements. This might be because the material has to be craned in, or sometimes it is for site tidiness or short-term storage onsite.

But a scenic sail up along the beautiful west coast of British Columbia is definitely a more unique form of delivery.

THRIVE Organic Compost

Veratec is excited to introduce THRIVE Organic Compost products to the landscaping market.

Through our new partnership with Orgaworld Canada, Veratec has obtained the exclusive rights to sell the compost that is produced by their purpose built facility in Surrey, BC. THRIVE Organic Compost is a byproduct of the local recycled green waste and food waste that is processed there.

State-of-the-art systems control temperature, pressure, and humidity in the enclosed composting tunnels, resulting in ideal conditions for microorganisms to complete the composting process. This results in high-quality, closed loop compost that is dry and virtually odour-free. It is tested regularly to meet federal (CCME) and provincial (OMMR) standards.

THRIVE Organic Compost is an excellent soil amender for both agriculture and urban gardening. The compost is also formulated into two different growing medias, THRIVE Planter for planter beds, and THRIVE Turf for lawns.

14 Reasons to Invest in Living Green Infrastructure

Original Post by Steven Peck and Michelle Sawka / View Original Post HERE

After years of neglect, infrastructure is again being discussed as a major priority for public investment in many jurisdictions. In the past, public investments have largely been directed to only grey infrastructure (roads, bridges, water treatment plants), the same type we have been building for decades. It’s time for change.

Here are 14 really good reasons why living green infrastructure such as trees, green roofs and walls, wetlands, and rain gardens should command a much greater share of public infrastructure investment.

1. Green Complements Grey
The lifespan of roads, roofs and pipes can be extended when they are built in tandem with green infrastructure. Providing shade and reducing stormwater runoff extend the life span of grey infrastructure demonstrating that grey and green investments can function effectively together.

2. Fiscally Prudent
Green infrastructure reduces water pollution more cost effectively than grey infrastructure alone. New York City recently concluded that a green and grey infrastructure approach offered cost savings of more than $1.5 billion over a grey infrastructure only approach.

3. Better Return on Investment
Green infrastructure provides multiple, rather than single purpose benefits. Green roofs can manage stormwater and save energy. Green infrastructure provides more benefits per dollar invested than single purpose grey infrastructure.

4. Food Security
Community gardens and green roofs provide both recreation and better access to local, healthy food. Food grown close to home reduces costs and environmental impacts associated with long haul transportation and can create jobs and strengthen community.

5. Reduces Building Energy Use
Green roofs, walls and neighboring trees can make individual buildings more energy efficient and climate friendly by reducing heating and cooling demands and greenhouse gases.

6. Creates Jobs
Green infrastructure investment, installation and maintenance is labor intensive and thus a great local job creator – from plant nurseries to designers and contractors.

7. Reduces Urban Heat Island
Cities are getting hotter and bigger. As we grow, buildings, roads and other grey infrastructure will continue to absorb and retain heat. To balance growth, living green infrastructure naturally cools cities.

8. Cleaner Air, Healthier People
Trees and vegetation directly remove air pollutants, as well as contribute to lowering stress and blood pressure. Lower air temperatures slow the formation of ground-level ozone or smog, which in turn can reduce asthma rates.

9. Cleaner Water
Pollutants captured in stormwater runoff contribute to water contamination in nearby lakes and rivers. When rainwater is absorbed where it falls, plants, soils and microbes break down many common pollutants leaving our surface water cleaner.

10. Reduces Flooding
Vegetation, drainage layers and soils retain water and reduce stormwater volumes. This keeps the rain out of our drains, combined sewers and sewer systems and helps reduce pollution and floods.

11. Higher Property Values
Many studies prove that the mere presence of living green infrastructure can improve property values – by as much as 30 percent.

12. Active Transportation
Connected green spaces make cities more livable, encouraging people to hike, bike, walk, and enjoy nature more often.

13. Improved Biodiversity
Urban forests, green roofs, walls and wetlands which embrace species diversity creating habitat for native bees, birds, butterflies, rare plants and other species.

14. Happier People
Seeing green actually makes people happier, improves their quality of life and contributes to a greater sense of community. In schools, it contributes to better academic performance and can reduce symptoms associated with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders.

Green infrastructure provides incredible value over time – and now more than ever we need to be planning our cities around the changing realities of climate, water availability, and growing global populations. We think the time to invest in these solutions is here.

Prep Your Garden for Spring Planting

It may not feel like it yet, but spring is right around the corner. That means gardeners everywhere are starting to break out tools, tend to soil, and grow seedlings indoors to prepare for spring planting.

We Moved! We are excited to announce yet another development for us, as of Monday July 7, 2014 we have moved into a larger office space and facility located in Chilliwack, B.C. Our Richmond and Aldergrove production facilities will remain in their current locations. Our new head office address is:

43779 Progress Way
Chilliwack, B.C. V2R 0E6

Phone: 604. 607. 3002
Fax: 604. 402. 3004

This step represents the continuing trend for Veratec (formerly Yardworks Supply), we are heading onwards and upwards! And the extra elbow room will be appreciated by our growing team.

Veratec (Yardworks) began over 10 years ago, with a single production yard and small office space. Eventually we were able to secure a 5 acre property and convert the house to a professional office space, and now we are moving into over 3,000 sq. ft. of office space and 40,000 sq. ft. of warehouse with our current 2 Lower Mainland production yards. From our start as a small local supplier, we are now shipping our premium products across Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest…..and growing!

Thank you to all our clients and business partners. We look forward to serving you and the next steps ahead.

We are excited to announce that as of Monday, May 12, Yardworks Supply launched our new name and brand: Veratec Engineered Products Inc.

Why the change?
After much thought and discussion, we realized that we were beginning to outgrow our Yardworks Supply brand which was established in 2003. We have evolved to include a deeper line of environmental remediation, sport field and green infrastructure products in addition to our well known quality engineered soils. We felt that “Yardworks” no longer effectively communicated our full offering of professional products, so it was time for change.

Why Veratec?
Finding our new name was a real challenge! And Veratec comes from the combination of a few words which are meaningful to our business;

“Vert” – From the French term for “Green”

“Erra” – From the Latin term “Terra”, meaning “Earth”

“Tec” – From the English word “Technology”

Veratec = Green Earth Technology

How will this affect you?
Other than becoming familiar with our new name, this will have no effect on the friendly knowledgeable customer service you have come to know, our premium soil products or day-to-day business activities. We will continue our efforts to promote environmental sustainability through innovative solutions for the urban landscape, green infrastructure and sport field markets.

We look forward to this next chapter in our business, and thank you for being a part of it!
